The Sphinx's Orange Friend
Lily loved oranges. Their bright color reminded her of sunshine, even on cloudy days. One afternoon, she peeled an especially orange orange and noticed something strange—the fruit inside was glowing!
Suddenly, Lily tumbled through a swirl of citrus-scented mist and landed in a magical desert. Before her stood a magnificent sphinx with emerald eyes and feathers like sunset clouds.
"Welcome, young traveler," the sphinx purred. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to solve my riddle."
Lily's knees trembled, but she stood tall. "I'm ready!"
"What walks but has no legs, speaks but has no mouth, and can be found even in the darkest places?"
Lily thought hard. Then she smiled. "A friend! Because friendship walks with you everywhere, speaks through your heart, and shines even when things seem dark!"
The sphinx bowed. "Correct! But there is one more test." She gestured to a shuffling figure approaching from the dunes—a zombie! But this zombie wasn't scary at all. It wore a floppy hat and had flowers tucked into its pockets. It looked lonely.
"This is Zed," said the sphinx. "Everyone runs away from him because they're afraid. But zombies need friends too."
Lily's heart went out to Zed. She remembered the orange she'd peeled earlier. "Wait!" She dug into her pocket and pulled out a glowing orange segment. "Would you like some?"
Zed's eyes widened. No one had ever offered him anything before. He took the orange and smiled—the biggest, friendliest smile Lily had ever seen.
"Thank you," Zed whispered. "You're my first friend."
The sphinx beamed. "You've solved the greatest riddle of all—true friendship sees with the heart, not just with eyes."
Lily hugged Zed, then found herself back in her kitchen, the ordinary orange in her hand. But now it felt magical, because she knew something wonderful: sometimes the scariest things just need a friend—and an orange—to show their true colors.
