The Sphinx's Orange Friend

In a garden where moonflowers bloomed at night, lived a sphinx named Cleo. She wasn't like other sphinxes with their stern faces and impossible riddles. Cleo loved to bake cookies and sing songs to the stars.

One autumn evening, when leaves turned the color of pumpkins, Cleo spotted something strange shuffling near her orange tree. It was a little zombie boy, with patches on his clothes and buttons where his eyes should be. He looked sad and lonely.

"Hello," said Cleo, landing softly beside him. "I'm Cleo. What's your name?"

The zombie boy looked surprised. Most creatures ran away when they saw him. "I'm Zed," he mumbled. "I'm looking for the Magic Orange. My grandmother said it can fix my heart."

Cleo's golden wings fluttered. "The Magic Orange appears only when someone shows true kindness. Would you like to help me pick regular oranges for my orange cakes?"

Zed nodded enthusiastically. Even though his stitched hands weren't very flexible, he worked carefully. They gathered baskets of the juiciest oranges, laughing as Z told silly jokes about zombie cats who couldn't catch mice because they kept falling apart.

As the sun began to set, Zed spotted a single orange glowing on the highest branch. It shimmered like a tiny sun.

"The Magic Orange!" he cried.

But instead of picking it himself, Zed pointed to a hungry rabbit family nearby. "They need it more than me," he said. "My heart works fine as long as I have friends."

At that moment, the Magic Orange floated down and split into perfect slices for everyone. And as they shared the sweet fruit under the stars, Zed's button eyes sparkled brighter than ever.

Cleo smiled, knowing the real magic wasn't the orange at all. It was the kindness of a friend who thought of others before himself.

From that day on, Zed visited Cleo's garden often, where the sphinx, the zombie, and many friends shared orange cakes and wonderful adventures together.
