The Sphinx's New Friend
Orange was no ordinary dog. His fur was the color of a sunset, fluffy and bright as a pumpkin. But Orange had a secret—he could dream while awake.
One afternoon, Orange found something strange in Mrs. Higgins' garden. It was an old, dusty hat with sequins that sparkled like captured stars. Being a curious dog, Orange nudged it with his nose. When the hat tumbled onto his head, the world began to spin.
Suddenly, Orange wasn't in the garden anymore. He stood in a desert of golden sand, under a sky so blue it made his heart sing. Before him rose a great pyramid, its stones gleaming like honey in the sunlight.
"Who goes there?" a voice rumbled, gentle as thunder.
Orange's tail gave a nervous wag. Sitting beside the pyramid was a sphinx—a creature with the body of a lion and the face of a kind woman. Her eyes held the wisdom of a thousand years.
"I'm Orange," the dog woofed bravely.
The sphinx's face softened. "I am Cleo. I have guarded this pyramid for centuries, but never has a dog visited me. Especially not one wearing such a magnificent hat."
Orange sat beside her. "Are you lonely?"
Cleo sighed, and the sand whispered around them. "Everyone is afraid of my riddles. They run away before they discover I only want someone to share my stories with."
Orange rested his head on her paw. "I'm not afraid of riddles. I'm afraid of thunderstorms. And the vacuum cleaner."
Cleo laughed, and it sounded like music. "Then you are braver than you know."
They spent the afternoon sharing stories—Cleo told of pharaohs and treasure, while Orange described the joy of chasing butterflies and Mrs. Higgins' chocolate chip cookies. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of peach and lavender, Cleo whispered something ancient and magical.
"Thank you, Orange. You taught me that true courage is kindness, and the best treasure is friendship."
The hat slipped from Orange's head, and he tumbled back into Mrs. Higgins' garden, the scent of desert sand still lingering on his fur. But Orange didn't feel ordinary anymore. He was a dog with a sphinx's friendship tucked in his heart—and that was the most magical thing of all.
That night, as Orange curled up in his cozy bed, he dreamed of pyramids and sphinxes, knowing that somewhere across the world, Cleo was whispering his name to the stars.
