The Sphinx's Moonlit Pool
Lily couldn't sleep. Through her window, she watched something magical glowing in the backyard. It was coming from near the old swimming pool that hadn't been used all winter.
She tiptoed outside in her pajamas, her bare feet whispering against the cool grass. What she saw made her gasp.
A magnificent sphinx sat beside the pool, its lion body shimmering like moonlight, its wise face kind and ancient. But the most surprising part was who was visiting the sphinx — her grumpy old cat, Whiskers, and the neighbor's golden retriever, Buster. Usually, these two couldn't stand each other!
"Welcome, young friend," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "Tonight, under the full moon, this pool becomes a Pool of Wishes."
Buster was running in excited circles around the sphinx's paws, tail wagging so hard his whole body wiggled. Whiskers sat primly, but his tail was curled with curiosity.
"Make three wishes," the sphinx told them. "But remember — the best wishes are ones you make together."
Buster barked, "More treats!"
Whiskers meowed, "A warm pillow by the fire."
But Lily had an idea. "What if we wish for something bigger?" she suggested. "What if we wish that every dog and cat could be friends like you two are tonight?"
The sphinx smiled, and the pool began to glow with silver light. "That," she said, "is exactly the kind of wish that changes the world."
Buster stopped running and looked at Whiskers. Whiskers stopped looking dignified and gave Buster a small bump with his head. The sphinx dipped her paw into the pool, and ripples of starlight spread across the water.
"Granted," she whispered.
The next morning, Lily's mom called her to the window. "Look at that!" The neighbor's dog was sleeping in their yard, curled up next to Whiskers. Both were peaceful, happy, and — most importantly — friends.
Lily smiled, knowing that magic is real, especially when you share it with others.
And sometimes, the best adventures happen when you least expect them, right in your own backyard.
