The Sphinx's Midnight Secret
Lily loved storms. When lightning flashed across the sky, she would press her nose against the window glass, counting the seconds until thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy.
One stormy night, something magical happened. A bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree in Lily's backyard, and when the light faded, a creature sat on the highest branch. It had the body of a lion and the head of a human.
"A sphinx!" Lily whispered. She'd read about them in her favorite storybook.
The sphinx climbed down and spoke in a voice like golden honey. "Hello, little one. I am Serafina, and I need a special friend to help me."
Lily tiptoed outside in her pajamas. "What do you need?"
"I've lost my riddle stone," Serafina explained. "Without it, I can't return to the magical world. Will you be my spy and help me find it?"
Lily felt important. A real spy mission! "I'll help!"
Together they searched the garden. Lightning made everything glow like magic. Behind a rosebush, Lily spotted something sparkling. "Is that it?"
Serafina purred with happiness. "You found it!" The stone shimmered with rainbow colors.
"But wait," Lily said sadly. "Does this mean you have to leave?"
The sphinx smiled. "I must return home, but now I have a friend in your world. Every time you see lightning, remember me. We'll be friends forever, across all worlds."
Serafina touched her forehead to Lily's, and Lily felt warm all over, like drinking hot cocoa on a snowy day.
"Thank you for being my spy and my friend," Serafina said. Another lightning bolt flashed, and when Lily opened her eyes, the sphinx was gone.
But in her pocket, Lily found a small stone that sparkled with rainbow colors. She smiled, knowing that friendship, like lightning, can bridge any distance.
And sometimes, if you look closely during a storm, you might see golden eyes watching from the trees, reminding you that magic is real, and friends never truly say goodbye.
