The Sphinx's Midnight Pool
Lily couldn't sleep. The full moon glowed through her window, calling her outside. She tiptoed into the garden, where something magical sparkled near the old oak tree.
There, a beautiful sphinx sat beside a shimmering pool that hadn't existed before. The sphinx had emerald feathers and wise, golden eyes.
"Welcome, Lily," the sphinx purred. "I guard the Pool of Forgotten Dreams. Each midnight, forgotten memories rise like steam. But first, you must solve my riddle."
Lily's heart raced with excitement. "I'm ready!"
"What seems scary but isn't real? What appears zombie-like but makes you feel?"
Lily thought hard. Then she noticed something strange in the pool's reflection. Her old toys—dusty, forgotten in the attic—were moving! They marched zombie-like, arms stiff, legs wobbling, but their painted eyes looked sad, not scary.
"The answer is... things that seem scary but just need love!" Lily cried.
The sphinx smiled. "Correct. These toys aren't zombies, Lily. They're your forgotten friends, waiting to be remembered."
Lily realized her toys weren't zombie-monsters at all—they were magical! The sphinx explained that forgotten things come alive at midnight, searching for someone to remember them.
"Will you help them?" the sphinx asked.
Lily dove into the magical pool, which was warm like sunshine. She swam to her toys and hugged each one—a ragged teddy bear, a one-legged soldier, a princess without a crown. As she held them, they stopped moving zombie-like and began dancing joyfully.
The sphinx nodded approvingly. "You've learned the greatest magic, Lily. Things aren't always what they seem. What looks scary might just need a little love."
Lily gathered her toys and climbed out of the pool. The sphinx and pool began to fade.
"Remember," the sphinx whispered as she disappeared, "imagination is the strongest magic. Never stop believing."
Back in her room, Lily placed each toy on her shelf. They looked ordinary now, but she knew their secret. The zombie-like creatures weren't monsters—they were friends waiting to be loved.
That night, Lily slept soundly, dreaming of sphinxes, magical pools, and the power of seeing with your heart.
