The Sphinx's Midnight Pool
Leo loved his backyard swimming pool more than anything. But tonight, the full moon turned the water into liquid silver, and something magical was about to happen.
As Leo crept outside in his pajamas, he gasped. A magnificent sphinx sat on the pool's edge — golden wings folded, wise eyes twinkling like starlight.
"Welcome, dream-swimmer," the sphinx purred. "Tonight, the pool becomes something special."
Before Leo could speak, strange creatures emerged from the garden shadows. They moved slowly, arms stretched forward, moaning softly.
"ZOMBIES!" Leo cried, trembling.
The sphinx chuckled warmly. "Oh, dear child, these are no monsters. They are the Sleepy Swimmers — ancient dream-creatures who haven't had their midnight splash yet. See how they move? That's not scary stumbling. That's just being VERY tired!"
Indeed, the zombie-looking creatures weren't scary at all. Their greenish skin sparkled like emeralds in the moonlight. Their "groans" were actually sleepy yawns.
"May I swim with them?" Leo asked bravely.
The sphinx smiled. "Only if you can guess my riddle: What must you lose to find what matters most?"
Leo thought hard, watching the sleepy creatures wade into the magical water. As they swam, they transformed — their skin turned golden, their eyes brightened, they began to laugh and dance in the silver water.
"Fear!" Leo exclaimed. "You have to lose fear to find friendship!"
"Correct!" The sphinx dipped her paw in the water. "Now swim, Leo. Swim with open heart."
Leo dove in, and the pool felt like pure magic. He laughed and splashed with the Sleepy Swimmers, who weren't zombie-like at all anymore. They were his friends.
When morning came, Leo woke in his bed. Had it been a dream? In his pocket, he found something — a small golden scale, shimmering like the sphinx's wing.
Some things look scary until you understand them. And sometimes, the most magical adventures begin when you're brave enough to ask questions instead of running away.
