The Sphinx's Magical Riddle

Lily loved the old oak tree at the edge of the playground. One sunny afternoon, while running laps with her baseball team, she noticed something strange. A golden **sphinx** with kind emerald eyes sat curled on the lowest branch, watching her practice.

"You throw like a star," the sphinx purred, making Lily gasp.

"You can talk?"

"I can do many things." The sphinx stretched her wings. "I've been waiting for someone with a brave heart. My friend **Goldfish** needs help."

Lily followed the magical creature to a tiny pond behind the school. There, a small orange **goldfish** swam in circles, looking worried. "My friend Zombie is stuck in the old garden shed," Goldfish bubbled. "He's not scary — he's just very, very slow and forgetful."

Lily peeked through the shed window. A zombie, but not like in movies. This zombie wore a baseball cap and moved like he was walking through honey. He had accidentally knocked over a stack of old baseball cards and couldn't figure out how to pick them up.

"The riddle," the sphinx whispered. "What has hands but cannot help?"

Lily thought hard. "A clock!"

Zombie's face lit up. "Clock... time... baseball time!" He remembered! He'd been looking for his favorite card from 1920.

Lily crawled through the window and helped Zombie gather the cards. He grinned, showing a single gold tooth. "Thank you. I'm not a zombie. I'm just really, really old and sometimes I forget my name."

The sphinx nodded. "True friends see who you really are, not what others say you are."

That afternoon, Lily's whole baseball team played catch with Zombie, Goldfish cheered from her portable bowl, and the sphinx kept score. Sometimes the best friends are the ones you find when you're not looking for them at all.

And whenever Lily felt scared of something new, she remembered: things aren't always what they seem — especially when magic is involved.
