The Sphinx's Magical Pool
Lily discovered the secret behind her grandmother's old orange tree on a Tuesday afternoon. The tree's oranges glimmered like tiny suns, but one particular orange shone with rainbow swirls. When Lily touched it, the fruit whispered, "Follow me."
The orange rolled away, bouncing over garden stones, leading Lily to a wooden gate she'd never noticed before. Beyond it lay a sparkling blue pool, its surface smooth as glass. Rising from the center was a magnificent sphinx with golden wings and emerald eyes.
"Welcome, young seeker," the sphinx purred. "I've waited fifty years for someone pure of heart."
From the pool's edge, a green figure peeked out—not scary, but friendly. It was a zombie, but not like in movies. This zombie, named Zephyr, had rosy cheeks and a flower crown woven into his mossy hair.
"Don't worry," Zephyr said, his voice crackling like autumn leaves. "I'm the pool's guardian. I was once a regular boy, but the sphinx's magic made me immortal so I could help those who find this place."
Lily's pockets buzzed. Her iPhone, which she'd brought to take garden pictures, suddenly displayed a message: MAGIC IS REAL IF YOU BELIEVE.
"Your phone can sense magic," Zephyr explained. "Now, why have you come?"
The rainbow-orange rolled to the sphinx's paw. "Lily saved me from falling," the orange spoke. "She deserves a wish."
The sphinx nodded. "What do you desire, child?"
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for anything—to fly, to be famous, for infinite toys. But she remembered how her grandmother had been feeling lonely lately, and how the garden needed more care.
"I wish," Lily said, "that my grandmother's garden could be magical forever, so everyone who visits feels as happy as I do now."
The sphinx's emerald eyes sparkled. "A selfless wish. The most powerful kind."
She touched her nose to the orange, and golden light burst across the garden. Flowers bloomed instantly. Butterflies with wings like stained glass danced through the air. The pool's water sparkled with tiny stars.
"Thank you," the sphinx said. "Visit whenever you need magic. But remember—" She gazed at Lily meaningfully. "The greatest magic lives in kindness."
Lily hugged Zephyr, who hugged her back gently. As she walked home, her iPhone displayed one last message: YOU ARE NOW A KEEPER OF MAGIC.
That night, Lily showed her grandmother the transformed garden. Together they watched fireflies dance over flowers that glowed softly in the moonlight. Some stories, Lily realized, don't end—they just keep blooming, like a garden that's been touched by wonder.
