The Sphinx's Magical Pool
Lily's golden retriever, Max, loved adventures. Every Saturday, they explored the woods behind their house. But this Saturday was different.
While chasing butterflies, Max discovered a hidden path covered in sparkling crystals. Lily followed, her heart pounding with excitement. The path led to a magnificent stone sphinx with emerald eyes that gleamed like stars.
"Welcome, young adventurer," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I've been waiting for someone pure of heart."
Lily gasped. "You can talk?"
"Indeed," the sphinx smiled. "Would you like to see my magical pool? It grants one special wish to those who answer my riddle."
Behind the sphinx lay a shimmering pool filled with rainbow water. Max wagged his tail so hard that his whole body wiggled.
"What's your riddle?" Lily asked bravely.
"What makes you strong when you eat it, makes rabbits jump with joy, and grows in gardens like leafy green magic?"
Lily thought hard. She remembered helping her mom in their garden, watching the rabbits hop through the vegetables.
"Spinach!" she exclaimed. "It's super healthy!"
"Correct!" The sphinx's emerald eyes sparkled. "You may make one wish."
Just then, the ground rumbled. Out stumbled a confused-looking zombie.
Lily gasped, but Max trotted forward and licked the zombie's hand.
"Oh hello, little dog," the zombie said shyly. "I'm not scary. I'm just a magical guardian who forgot how to smile."
Lily realized this zombie wasn't like the ones in movies. He looked sad and lonely.
"I wish," Lily declared, "that our new friend remembers how to be happy again!"
The sphinx nodded. "A wish for another is the most powerful magic of all."
Rainbow water swirled around the zombie. Slowly, his gray skin turned pink, and he began to dance a funny jig. "I remember! I love to dance!"
Max barked happily and joined in, spinning in circles. Lily laughed and clapped. Even the sphinx smiled.
"Thank you," the dancer said. "You taught me that kindness is the best magic."
That evening, Lily told her mom about their adventure. Her mom smiled and served spinach for dinner.
"Maybe," Lily whispered to Max, "it's magical spinach."
Max thumped his tail, and Lily knew the best adventures are the ones where you make new friends and share happiness wherever you go.
