The Sphinx's Magical Pool
Lily loved her grandmother's old straw hat. It was too big, falling over her eyes, but she pretended it made her invisible. One summer afternoon, wearing her hat, she followed a orange butterfly past the garden until she found something amazing.
Behind the old willow tree was a pool she'd never seen before. The water sparkled like diamonds, and swimming in circles was a goldfish the size of a cat! His scales were golden and shimmering.
"Hello there," said a deep, kind voice. Lily looked up—and gasped.
Perched on a rock was a sphinx! But not a scary one like in books. This sphinx had warm, friendly eyes and soft fur the color of sand.
"I'm Cleo," the sphinx said, smiling. "And this is my friend Finnegan the goldfish. We've been waiting for someone kind to find us."
Lily's hat almost fell off as she stepped closer. "Waiting? For what?"
"To share our magic," Cleo explained. "But only with someone who would use it kindly." She nudged a papaya toward Lily. "This fruit gives one wish. But you must choose wisely."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything! Toys, candy, endless summer... But then she thought about her little brother Toby, who had been sad because his favorite toy bear was lost.
"I wish I could find Toby's bear," she said softly.
The papaya glowed golden light. Suddenly, the goldfish splashed happily, and there, tucked between the willow's roots, was the missing bear!
"You chose kindness over greed," Cleo said warmly. "That's the greatest magic of all."
Lily ran home with the bear, her magic hat bouncing on her head. When Toby saw his bear, he smiled bigger than the moon.
That night, Lily peeked out her window. The sphinx winked from the garden, and the goldfish did a happy flip in the magical pool. Some magic, Lily realized, wasn't meant to be kept secret—it was meant to be shared.
And every time she wore her grandmother's hat after that, magical adventures seemed to find her.
