The Sphinx's Magical Match

Lily followed the glowing cat through the mist until she reached a golden court she'd never seen before. The cat, whose fur sparkled like stardust, purred softly and led her to a creature with lion's paws and wise human eyes—a sphinx!

"Welcome, young one," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Game of Wonder. Will you play padel with me?"

Lily's eyes widened. Padel was her favorite sport! But as she gripped her magical racket (which appeared in her hand with a shimmer), she noticed someone shambling nearby. A zombie!

He had greenish skin and tattered clothes, but his eyes looked sad, not scary. The zombie sighed and dragged his feet.

"That's Zephyr," the sphinx explained. "He was once the finest padel player, but a lonely wizard cast a spell. Now everyone runs away before they can know his kind heart."

The magical cat rubbed against Zephyr's leg, and the zombie's face lit up with surprise. He reached down slowly, and the cat purred louder.

"He wants to play too," Lily realized. "But he has no partner."

Lily had an idea. "Zephyr, will you be my doubles partner?"

The zombie's jaw dropped. Then he nodded vigorously, his green face breaking into a gap-toothed grin.

Together, Lily and Zephyr played the most magical padel match ever. The sphinx hit shots that turned into butterflies, and Zephyr returned them with surprising grace. The cat cheered from the sidelines, its fur glowing brighter with each point.

When they won, the sphinx smiled. "Friendship has broken the spell!"

Zephyr's green skin faded to warm brown, his clothes mended themselves, and he stood tall.

"Thank you," Zephyr said, his voice no longer groany. "I thought I'd be lonely forever."

Lily hugged her new friend. The magical cat purred, the sphinx nodded approvingly, and Lily realized that the best magic wasn't the enchanted court or the glowing fur—it was seeing past appearances to find the friend underneath.
