The Sphinx's Magical Game
Lily was bouncing a bright blue ball against her garage wall when her tabby cat, Mittens, suddenly pounced on it and darted behind some old boxes. "Mittens! Come back!" Lily laughed, chasing after her playful cat.
Behind the boxes, something sparkled in the dusty corner. An old wooden chest, covered in cobwebs. Lily lifted the lid and gasped. Inside lay a golden statue of a sphinx, with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. The sphinx held a mysterious cable made of twisted silver and copper.
"You found me," whispered the sphinx, suddenly opening one emerald eye. Lily jumped back, clutching Mittens tighter. "I've been sleeping for one hundred years. I am the Sphinx of Games, and I need someone to play padel with me."
"Padel?" Lily asked. "Like tennis?"
"Better than tennis!" The sphinx stood up, shaking off centuries of dust. "Magical padel. If you win, you get one wish. If I win, I stay asleep forever."
Lily's heart raced. "I accept!"
They appeared on a shimmering court floating in the sky. The sphinx handed Lily a magical padel racket that glowed with rainbow colors. They played the most wonderful game ever—balls bounced like rainbows, rackets made musical notes when they hit, and the cable twisted through the air, keeping score with sparkling numbers.
But then Lily noticed something strange. The sphinx was moving slower and slower, her golden fur turning gray. "What's happening?" Lily cried.
"I haven't played in so long," the sphinx said sadly. "I'm becoming a zombie—stuck between sleeping and waking. Only friendship can wake me up completely."
Lily dropped her racket. "I don't want to win! I want to be your friend!"
She ran to the sphinx and hugged her tight. Mittens purred and rubbed against the sphinx's leg. Something magical happened. The cable glowed brighter than ever, and the sphinx's golden fur returned.
"Friendship," the sphinx whispered, "is the best game of all."
The sphinx granted Lily a wish anyway. Lily wished that the sphinx would never be lonely again.
Now, every afternoon, Lily, Mittens, and the Sphinx of Games play padel together. And sometimes, if you look closely at Lily's garage, you can still see that magical cable shimmering in the corner, waiting for the next game to begin.
Moral: True friendship is more valuable than winning any game.
