The Sphinx's Magical Friend
Lily loved the old pond behind her house. The water shimmered like diamonds in the afternoon sun. One day, she noticed something strange—a stone creature with lion paws and a human face half-hidden in the reeds. A sphinx!
"Hello, little one," the sphinx said, its voice sounding like gentle thunder. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."
Lily stepped closer. "Are you magic?"
"Very magic," the sphinx nodded. "But I'm lonely. My friend Zara lives in that cave, but everyone calls her a zombie because she moves slowly and her hair is always messy from sleeping for a hundred years. But she's the kindest friend I've ever known."
Zara shuffled out of the cave. She did look a little funny—her skin was pale green and she moved like she was still waking up. But when she smiled, her eyes sparkled like stars.
"Want to play padel?" Zara asked, holding up a magical paddle that glowed purple. "We use lightning bolts instead of balls!"
Lily's eyes widened. "REALLY?"
The sphinx nodded. "Watch."
Zara swung her paddle, and *CRACK*—a tiny lightning bolt zipped through the air! Lily laughed and clapped. When Zara tossed her another paddle, Lily swung it just as a raindrop fell from the sky. Suddenly, her own lightning bolt appeared!
They played until sunset, lightning bolts dancing over the water like fireflies. The sphinx told stories of ancient Egypt, and Zara taught Lily secret games.
"Why were you sleeping for a hundred years?" Lily asked.
"Waiting for someone who wouldn't run away," Zara said softly. "Someone who would see me, not just what I look like."
Lily hugged her new friend. "I'm glad I found you both."
Every day after school, Lily returned to the pond. She learned that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures make the best friends, and that magic lives everywhere—even in your own backyard.
The sphinx, Zara, and Lily became the best of friends, playing lightning padel by the water, living their magical adventure together.
