The Sphinx's Magical Baseball Game
Leo loved playing baseball in the park near his house. Every Saturday, he'd bring his lucky glove and his golden retriever, Cooper. Cooper would chase every ball Leo hit, wagging his tail furiously.
One cloudy afternoon, Leo hit the ball farther than ever before. It sailed over the fence and landed beside the old stone sphinx that guarded the park's entrance. The sphinx had been there for as long as anyone could remember, its lion body and human head covered in moss.
Cooper bounded after the ball, but when he reached the sphinx, something magical happened. The stone creature's eyes opened, glowing like warm honey.
"You hit like a champion," the sphinx spoke in a rumbling voice. "But can you solve my riddle?"
Leo's heart pounded. "Yes!"
"What has hands but cannot catch?" the sphinx asked.
Leo thought hard. Then he smiled. "A clock!"
The sphinx nodded, and suddenly the ground trembled. From the earth emerged not one, but many zombie garden gnomes! They weren't scary though—they giggled and moved in jerky, funny dances.
"These zombie gnomes love baseball," the sphinx explained. "But they need someone to teach them how to play properly."
Just then, a giant bear emerged from the woods. Cooper growled, but the bear held up its paw peaceably. The zombie gnomes cheered—they knew this friendly bear!
"Bernie the Bear wants to be the umpire," the sphinx said. "And Cooper can be your teammate."
Leo couldn't believe it. He spent the afternoon teaching the zombie gnomes to catch, hit, and run bases. Bernie called fair plays with a booming voice, and Cooper herded the gnomes when they got confused. They played until sunset, laughing and cheering.
"You taught us friendship and fun," the sphinx said as the sun went down. "The greatest victory isn't winning—it's playing together with joy."
The magical creatures returned to their hidden places, but Leo knew they'd be back next Saturday. Baseball would never be the same—and that was the most wonderful thing of all.
