The Sphinx's Magic Vitamins

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's dusty attic. One rainy afternoon, she found a glowing bottle labeled 'Magic Vitamins.' Curious, she swallowed one tiny blue pill.

Suddenly, the world grew bright and sparkly! A magnificent sphinx appeared right in the attic. With the body of a lion and the head of a wise person, the sphinx smiled gently.

'Little one,' the sphinx rumbled kindly, 'those magic vitamins let you talk to animals. But you must use this gift to help others.'

Lily's heart raced with excitement! She rushed to the palm tree in her backyard. She had always wondered what her grumpy bulldog Barnaby was thinking.

'Barnaby?' she whispered. 'Can you understand me?'

The bulldog's eyes widened. 'Lily? You can hear me?' His voice sounded like gravel in a mixer.

'What's wrong, Barnaby? Why are you always so grumpy?'

Barnaby sighed. 'There's a bully bull in the neighbor's field. He chases me away from my favorite sleeping spot under the oak tree. I'm just a little bulldog, and he's so big!'

Lily knew what she had to do. With the sphinx watching from above, she marched to the neighbor's field. There stood the biggest bull she had ever seen, with horns like crescent moons.

'Mr. Bull?' Lily said bravely. 'Why won't you let Barnaby sleep under the oak tree?'

The bull looked surprised. 'That little dog? He's not afraid of me?'

'No,' Lily said. 'He just wants a friend. And so do you.'

The bull lowered his huge head. 'I've been lonely since my cow friend moved away. I thought being scary would make me feel better.'

Lily smiled. 'Being kind feels much better. Would you like to be Barnaby's friend?'

That afternoon, Lily watched as the bull and bulldog napped together in the sunshine, best friends at last.

The sphinx appeared again, nodding proudly. 'You used your gift wisely, Lily. The magic vitamins will disappear now, but the friendship you made will last forever.'

And indeed, every day after school, Lily would wave to Barnaby and his big bull friend, sleeping peacefully under the palm tree, dreaming of their next adventure together.
