The Sphinx's Magic Pool

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially the hidden corner behind the roses. That's where she found the mysterious pool, shimmering with rainbow colors even though it was only a tiny puddle.

"Hello, little one," a riddle-voice purred. Out of nowhere appeared a small sphinx, no bigger than a kitten, with emerald feathers and kind golden eyes.

"I am Cleo," the sphinx said. "This is my magic pool. It shows your true heart."

Lily's curly red hair bounced as she leaned closer. "What does it show?"

"Many things." Cleo pawed at the water. Images swirled—Lily sharing her lunch, helping a hurt bird, standing up for her friend Tom when others laughed at his glasses.

"But I'm scared sometimes," Lily whispered. "I'm not brave like heroes."

Cleo laughed gently. "Bravery isn't about not being scared. Bravery is doing what's right even when you ARE scared." She nudged something toward Lily—a bright green leaf. "Taste this."

Lily hesitated. "It looks like spinach! I hate spinach!"

"This is magic spinach," Cleo promised. "One bite gives you courage. But only if you're brave enough to try it."

Lily's fingers trembled, but she remembered the pool's images. Helping Tom had been scary. The bird had pecked her hand. She had been brave before.

She popped the leaf into her mouth.

It tasted like sunshine and strawberries! Suddenly, Lily understood—true magic wasn't the leaf. It was having the courage to try something new.

"You're already brave," Cleo purred. "You just needed to believe it."

That day, Lily learned something wonderful: everyone has magic inside them—the magic of kindness, of trying, of being a good friend. And sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is simply take one small bite of something new.

The sphinx and the magic pool disappeared into sparkles, but Lily carried their lesson in her heart forever.
