The Sphinx's Magic Pool

Leo hated spinach. Every evening at dinner, he'd push the green leaves around his plate, wishing they'd disappear. But tonight was different.

After dinner, Leo wandered to the backyard, where Dad had just finished building a new stone pool. In its center sat a tiny stone sphinx - a lion with a human face, wings folded at its sides.

"Go away, spinach breath," Leo mumbled, though nobody was there.

Suddenly, the sphinx's stone eyes glowed golden. The creature stretched its wings and spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "Spinach breath? That's not very friendly."

Leo jumped back. "You're alive!"

"I'm Sofia, guardian of the Magic Pool," the sphinx said. "And I sense you need a friend."

The pool water began to shimmer, reflecting not Leo's face, but a crying girl from his class - Maya, who sat alone at lunch every day.

"Maya has no friends," Leo whispered. "But I'm too scared to talk to her."

Sofia smiled. "You know what's magical? Spinach. It makes lions strong, sphinxes wise, and hearts brave. The very thing you hated is what gives courage."

She tapped the water, and an image appeared: Leo sitting with Maya at lunch, both smiling.

"Tomorrow," Sofia said, "you'll be the friend she needs. True courage isn't about being fearless. It's about kindness, even when you're scared."

Leo reached out to touch the sphinx's stone paw, but she was already turning back into a statue. Only the golden glow in her eyes remained.

The next day at school, Leo's heart pounded as he approached Maya's empty table. He thought of spinach - strong, brave, magical. He sat down.

"Hi," he said. "Want to share my lunch?"

Maya looked up, surprised. Then she smiled. It was the best lunch Leo had ever had.

That evening, Leo ate all his spinach without complaint. Sometimes, he whispered to the stone sphinx in the backyard, "Thank you, my friend." And if he looked very carefully, he could see the sphinx's golden eyes twinkling back at him.

Magic, Leo learned, isn't just about flying sphinxes and enchanted pools. Sometimes, the most powerful magic of all is simply being a friend.
