The Sphinx's Magic Pool
Lily loved her grandmother's garden, especially the ancient palm tree that swayed in the warm breeze like a dancing friend. Its rough bark felt like old paper, and its long fronds whispered secrets when the wind blew through them. One sunny afternoon, while chasing a butterfly behind the palm tree, Lily discovered something extraordinary.
A tiny sphinx no bigger than a kitten sat beside a sparkling pool of water that shimmered like liquid diamonds. The sphinx had soft emerald wings that glittered in the sunlight, wise eyes like polished amber, and fur the color of desert sand.
"Welcome, young one," the sphinx purred in a voice like gentle rain. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Question Pool. If you answer my riddle, you may make one wish."
Lily's heart raced with excitement. Her grandmother had told her stories about magical creatures, but she never thought she'd meet one!
Cleo's whiskers twitched playfully. "Here is your riddle: I am green and leafy, sometimes yucky to eat, but I give you strength to run and play. What am I?"
Lily wrinkled her nose, thinking hard. She remembered her mother always saying at dinner, "Eat your spinach so you'll grow big and strong!" Just last week, she'd even helped plant spinach in their vegetable garden.
"Spinach!" Lily shouted, jumping up and down.
The sphinx nodded, its emerald wings shimmering with pride. "Correct, clever child! You see with more than just your eyes."
The pool began to glow with golden light, and Lily closed her eyes to make her wish. "I wish for my best friend Mia to see this magic too."
Suddenly, Mia appeared beside her, eyes wide with wonder. "How did I get here?" she gasped, staring at the sphinx.
Together, the two girls sat by the magical pool, listening as Cleo told stories of ancient Egypt, flying over pyramids, and faraway lands filled with adventure. The sphinx taught them that real magic wasn't in wishes granted, but in friendship shared and discoveries made together.
From that day on, Lily and Mia visited Cleo every afternoon after school. They learned riddles, planted magic spinach in the garden, and discovered that the best adventures are the ones shared with a true friend.
And sometimes, when nobody was looking, they even started liking spinach—especially when it made them strong enough for their next magical adventure.
