The Sphinx's Magic Pool

Lily loved exploring behind her grandmother's old house. One day, she found a rusty cable car hidden in the bushes. It creaked but still worked! When she pulled the lever, the cable car zipped down a hidden track to a secret garden.

In the middle of the garden sparkled the most beautiful pool Lily had ever seen. The water glowed like liquid diamonds. But guarding it sat a stone sphinx with emerald eyes.

"Welcome, young explorer," the sphinx spoke in a kind voice. "I've waited fifty years for someone brave enough to find this magic pool. Its waters grant one wish - but only to those with true courage in their hearts."

Suddenly, something groaned from behind a rosebush. A zombie stumbled out! Lily gasped - but then she saw the zombie was wearing a colorful party hat and holding a wilted flower.

"I'm not scary," the zombie said sadly. "I'm just Zedd, and I've been lonely for so long. The sphinx told me about the magic pool, but I'm too scared to make my wish."

Lily's fear melted away. Zedd wasn't a monster - he was just lonely, like she sometimes felt when she had to stay home alone.

"Come with me," Lily said, taking Zedd's hand. His skin was cold but his smile was warm.

The sphinx smiled. "True courage isn't about not being scared. It's about being kind even when you are."

Together, Lily and Zedd approached the glowing pool. "What's your wish?" Lily asked.

"For friends," Zedd whispered. "Real friends who won't run away."

The pool bubbled and sparkled. When the water cleared, Zedd looked different - less green and more like a regular boy. But his kind eyes stayed the same.

"Thank you," Zedd beamed. "Will you come back tomorrow?"

"Every day," Lily promised.

As she rode the cable car home, Lily knew she had found something better than magic - a true friend, and the lesson that courage means kindness, even when things seem scary at first.
