The Sphinx's Magic Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on warm summer days. But today was different. Dark clouds gathered overhead, and thunder rumbled like a sleeping giant waking up.
She spotted something peculiar near the old **pool** — a small stone **sphinx** with wings folded neatly against its sides. Its eyes seemed to sparkle, even in the gray light. On its head sat a tiny purple **hat**, decorated with silver stars that shimmered like captured moonbeams.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke, its voice sounding like gentle wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit on a stormy day."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"Magic happens when you least expect it," the sphinx said with a mysterious smile. Suddenly, a bolt of **lightning** cracked across the sky, turning everything bright as day for one heartbeat.
From somewhere in the sphinx's feathers, it pulled out a perfect, glowing **orange**. "Courage tastes like sunshine," it said, handing it to Lily. The fruit felt warm against her palms, as if it held all the happiness of summer inside its peel.
"But what's the hat for?" Lily asked, nibbling a sweet segment.
"This?" The sphinx adjusted the purple hat with one claw. "It's my Thinking Hat. Every time I wear it, I remember something important — that the bravest thing you can do is be kind to others, even when you're scared."
Thunder crashed directly overhead. Lily jumped, but then remembered the sphinx's wisdom. She reached out and patted the stone creature's warm paw.
"You're not scared?" Lily asked.
"Not when I have a friend," the sphinx replied simply.
As the rain began to fall, tickling the garden's leaves, Lily understood. True magic wasn't just about talking statues or glowing fruit. It was about finding courage together, even when the sky growled.
She ran home with her heart full of sunshine, knowing she'd return tomorrow. Some friends are worth visiting, rain or shine.
