The Sphinx's Magic Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially the hidden corner behind the rosebushes. One sunny afternoon, she pushed aside some vines and discovered something she'd never seen before—a crystal-clear pool of water that sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight.
But the most amazing thing was what sat beside the pool. An ancient stone sphinx with emerald eyes and wings folded gracefully at its sides. Lily held her breath, expecting it to be just a statue. But then the sphinx blinked!
"Hello, young explorer," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone with a curious heart."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You're alive! But... you're made of stone!"
"I am a guardian," the sphinx explained. "This pool shows the truth in your heart, but only to those who prove themselves worthy. Would you like to see?"
Lily nodded eagerly. "What must I do?"
The sphinx smiled mysteriously. "Simply answer my riddle: What has to be broken before you can use it?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at the water, at the garden, at the sphinx itself. And then she remembered breakfast that morning. "An egg!" she exclaimed.
"Correct!" The sphinx dipped its paw into the water, and ripples spread across the surface. The water began to glow softly.
Lily peeked into the pool. At first, she saw her own reflection. But then the image changed. She saw herself sharing her toys with children who had none, helping her grandmother plant flowers, and reading stories to her little brother.
"This is what your heart truly desires," the sphinx said gently. "Not riches or adventures, but kindness and connection. That is the greatest magic of all."
Lily felt warmth spread through her chest. She had never realized it before, but the sphinx was right.
"Remember," the sphinx whispered as its eyes began to close, "the most precious magic isn't in wishes granted, but in love given freely."
Lily visited the pool often after that day, though the sphinx never spoke again. But every time she looked into the water, she saw reminders to be kind and generous. And she discovered that the sphinx had given her something better than any wish—a heart that found joy in making others happy.
Sometimes, the best magic is the kind we carry inside us, shining like sunlight on water, touching everyone we meet.
