The Sphinx's Magic Phone
Lily loved exploring. Every summer, she visited her grandmother in Egypt, and every summer, she discovered something new.
This time, Lily brought her favorite treasure: her shiny blue iPhone. She loved taking pictures of everything interesting.
One hot afternoon, Lily wandered far from the tour groups. The Great Pyramid rose before her, enormous and golden in the sunlight. But something caught her eye—a smaller pyramid nearby, almost hidden in the sand.
"Hello?" Lily called softly.
A low rumble answered. The sand shifted, and a creature emerged—not quite a lion, not quite a human, but something magical and ancient. It was the Sphinx.
Lily gasped, but she wasn't scared. The Sphinx's eyes were kind.
"I've waited thousands of years," the Sphinx said in a voice like old stones and whispering winds. "For someone with a magic window in their pocket."
Lily looked at her iPhone. "This? It's just a phone."
"Show me," the Sphinx said.
Lily turned it on and opened the camera app. She held it up to show the Sphinx his own face.
The Sphinx stared at the screen, wonder filling his golden eyes. "I haven't seen myself in five thousand years. I forgot what I looked like."
Lily's heart swelled with something warm and wonderful.
"Take my picture?" the Sphinx asked. "Please?"
Lily snapped the photo. Then another. Then one where they stood together, grinning.
"Thank you, Lily," the Sphinx said, and a single crystal tear rolled down his stone cheek. "You've given me back something I lost long ago—myself."
He pressed his paw to her iPhone. The screen glowed with mysterious symbols.
"Now, your phone can show you the stories hidden in stones. Every wall has a tale. Every monument holds a memory. You'll see them now."
Lily pointed her iPhone at the small pyramid. On her screen appeared ancient Egyptians building it, singing and laughing together.
"Magic," Lily whispered.
"Friendship," the Sphinx corrected. "That's the strongest magic of all."
That summer, Lily took thousands of photos. But her favorite was the first one—the picture of a Sphinx who had forgotten his own face, until a curious girl with a blue iPhone helped him remember.
The Sphinx gave Lily the greatest gift anyone could receive: the ability to see the wonder in everything, and the knowledge that friendship can bridge any gap—even one of five thousand years.
