The Sphinx's Magic Palm

Leo loved the old palm tree at the edge of his grandmother's garden. Its leaves swished and swayed in the breeze, whispering secrets. One hot afternoon, Leo noticed something strange—a tiny golden creature sleeping on the highest frond!

It was a sphinx, but no bigger than Leo's hand. The sphinx had lion paws, eagle wings, and a kind, wise face.

"Hello," said Leo, his eyes wide with wonder.

The sphinx stretched and yawned. "I'm Sophie," she said with a smile. "I've been waiting for a friend like you."

Suddenly, a small figure shuffled from behind the garden shed. It looked like a zombie, but not scary like in movies—just a lonely little toy zombie with missing buttons and one loose eye.

Leo stepped back nervously.

Sophie flew to his shoulder. "Don't judge by appearances," she whispered. "Sometimes the scariest-looking things just need a friend."

The toy zombie stopped and looked at them with his one good eye. "I'm not scary," he said softly. "I'm just lonely. My owner lost me, and I've been trying to find my way home."

Leo's heart melted. He knelt down. "I'll help you. What's your name?"

"Zed," said the zombie.

Together, Leo, Sophie, and Zed searched the neighborhood. They asked everyone they met, but no one had lost a zombie toy.

"Maybe," said Sophie, "you found a new home instead."

Zed looked at Leo with hope. "Could I stay with you?"

Leo smiled and held out his hand. "Yes! You can be my friend."

That night, Leo placed Zed on his pillow, and Sophie curled up on the palm tree outside his window. As Leo drifted to sleep, he heard Sophie's magical whisper: "The best friendships come when you open your heart to the unexpected."

In the morning, Leo fixed Zed's missing button with his grandmother's help. Now Zed had two bright eyes and a brand new friend—and Leo had learned that magic happens when you're kind to everyone, even zombies.
