The Sphinx's Magic Palm

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard garden. Every afternoon, her golden retriever Sandy would trot beside her, nose twitching at every new scent.

One Tuesday, something extraordinary happened. Sandy started barking at the ancient palm tree near the garden's edge. Lily had never noticed it before—but now, its bark seemed to shimmer like moonlight.

"Silly Sandy," Lily laughed, reaching out to touch the trunk. But her hand passed right through!

Inside the palm tree was a whole new world. And there, perched on a crystal branch, sat a small sphinx the size of a cat. She had emerald-green wings and eyes that twinkled like stars.

"Hello, Lily," the sphinx purred. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find my secret palm."

Lily's eyes widened. "You know my name?"

"Sphinxes know many things," the creature replied mysteriously. "But I have something special for you." She reached into her wings and pulled out a handful of glowing berries. "These are courage vitamins. One bite gives you bravery for one whole day."

Lily gasped. "But why give them to me?"

The sphinx smiled, and Sandy trotted forward to nudge her hand. "Because only someone who treats all creatures with kindness—and has a faithful friend like Sandy—can use them wisely. These vitamins are for helping others, not yourself."

Lily understood. The next day, when new boy Marcus sat alone at lunch, Lily ate one vitamin and invited him to sit with her. When her little brother was scared of the dark, she shared another.

Every time she visited the sphinx's palm, there were more magical vitamins waiting. But the real magic wasn't in the berries—it was in Lily's heart, which grew braver and kinder with every good deed.

Sandy always knew when it was time to visit their secret friend. The sphinx would wink her sparkling eyes and say, "Now that's the true courage—being kind even when no one is watching."

And Lily knew she was right.
