The Sphinx's Magic Oranges
Lily discovered the sphinx hiding behind her family's orange tree, its golden wings tucked tight around its body. The creature looked sad, its normally sparkling eyes dim like faded stars.
"Hello," Lily whispered, approaching carefully. "What's wrong?"
The sphinx sighed, and its breath smelled like ancient libraries and rain. "I've forgotten my magic," she said. "Without my daily vitamin of wonder, I can't fly or solve riddles. I'm just a regular lion with wings."
Lily's eyes widened. She loved riddles! "How do you get your vitamin of wonder?"
"Only when lightning strikes an orange from my special tree," the sphinx explained, nodding toward a tiny orange tree Lily had never noticed before. "But there hasn't been a storm in weeks. I'm stuck here, hungry and magic-less."
That's when Lily had the most brilliant idea. She grabbed her science kit from the garage and ran to her dad's workshop. "Dad! Can you help me make something that looks like lightning?"
Together, they built a simple machine with batteries and wires that could create a tiny spark. Lily held an orange from the special tree in one hand and the machine in the other. "Ready?" she asked the sphinx.
The sphinx nodded nervously.
ZAP! A tiny blue spark jumped from the machine to the orange. The fruit glowed bright orange for a moment, then returned to normal. But when the sphinx took a bite, her eyes began to sparkle again.
"It worked!" she exclaimed. "But wait—this wasn't real lightning. How did it work?"
Lily grinned. "You said you needed a vitamin of wonder. I think the real magic isn't the lightning at all. It's having friends who help you."
The sphinx's wings stretched wide, shimmering in the sunlight. "You're right," she said. "Friendship is the strongest magic of all. And YOU, Lily, are full of wonder."
From that day on, the sphinx never ran out of magic. She realized that every time Lily came to visit, bringing stories and laughter, that was her true vitamin. And sometimes, just for fun, they'd still zap oranges with tiny lightning bolts—because making magic together with a friend is the most wonderful adventure of all.
