The Sphinx's Magic Lunch

Lily loved her garden more than anything in the world. Every day after school, she would tend to her vegetables, especially her prize-winning spinach plants. They were the greenest and tallest in the whole neighborhood! One afternoon, as Lily was watering her garden, she noticed something strange poking out from behind the old oak tree. It was a funny-looking hat, purple with yellow stars all over it. Lily picked it up and placed it on her head. Suddenly, ZAP! A tiny bolt of lightning shot from the hat's brim!

'Wow!' Lily gasped, but when she looked around, she wasn't in her garden anymore. She stood before a magnificent creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise human. It was a sphinx!

The sphinx's golden eyes twinkled. 'Hello, young gardener. I am Sophie the Sphinx, and I have been waiting for someone pure of heart to find my magic hat.' Her tummy rumbled loudly. 'I'm so hungry! I haven't eaten in three hundred years.' Lily's eyes widened. 'What do sphinxes eat?' Sophie sighed. 'Only the most delicious vegetable in the world — fresh, magical spinach from a child's garden.' Lily thought of her garden back home. 'I have the best spinach! But how will we get there?' Sophie smiled. 'The magic hat, of course!' Lily placed the purple hat on Sophie's lion head. BOOM! A giant lightning bolt shot into the sky, creating a sparkling pathway all the way to Lily's backyard.

There, they feasted on spinach together, and Sophie taught Lily that sharing what you grow with friends makes everything taste better. From that day on, Lily always planted extra vegetables, just in case a hungry sphinx needed a magical lunch. And sometimes, on rainy afternoons, she would see tiny lightning bolts in her garden and smile, knowing her friend was near.
