The Sphinx's Magic Hat
One sunny afternoon, Lily discovered an old purple hat in her grandmother's attic. It sparkled with tiny stars that seemed to dance when she touched them. Curious, she placed the hat on her head.
WHOOSH! The room spun like a merry-go-round, and suddenly Lily stood beside a crystal-blue pool of water under a sky filled with two moons.
Before her stood the most magnificent creature she had ever seen—a sphinx with emerald-green wings and wise amber eyes. The sphinx's lion body gleamed like golden honey in the sunlight.
"I am Cleo, guardian of the Magic Water," the sphinx spoke gently. "Only those with pure hearts can find this place."
Lily's eyes widened. "Your water sparkles like diamonds!"
"This water grants wishes," Cleo explained, "but only for those who prove themselves worthy. First, you must answer my riddle."
Lily nodded bravely, her heart pounding like a little drum.
The sphinx's riddle was tricky, but Lily thought hard. "I have hands but cannot clap. I have a face but cannot smile. What am I?"
"A clock!" Lily exclaimed.
Cleo smiled warmly. "Correct, young friend. You may make one wish."
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for toys, or candy, or treasures. But she remembered how her grandmother missed her old friend who lived far away.
"I wish my grandmother could see her best friend again," Lily said.
The sphinx nodded approvingly. "A wish born from friendship is the most powerful magic of all."
The water glowed golden, and when Lily returned home, she found her grandmother laughing with her childhood friend at the kitchen table.
Lily touched the purple hat with a smile. Sometimes the best magic is the magic of friendship.
