The Sphinx's Magic Hat

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic. Rain pattered on the roof as she climbed the creaky stairs. In the corner, under a dusty sheet, she found something wonderful — a tall purple hat with silver stars.

"Try it on," whispered a voice.

Lily jumped! A tiny goldfish swam in a glass bowl on the windowsill. But fish couldn't talk, could they?

"I'm Clementine," the fish said. "That hat belongs to the Sphinx of Wonder Falls. She's been looking for it for three hundred years!"

Lily's eyes widened. "The Sphinx? Like the one in stories?"

"Better," Clementine bubbled. "She guards the waterfall behind our house. Put on the hat, and you'll see!"

Lily placed the purple hat on her head. WHOOSH! The attic spun away.

Suddenly she stood before a magnificent waterfall. Water sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight. Perched on a rock sat the Sphinx — but not scary like in books. She had emerald feathers instead of lion fur, and her wings shimmered like rainbows.

"You found my hat!" the Sphinx trilled joyfully. "I thought I'd never see it again. It was a gift from the first river spirit, long ago."

Lily approached shyly. "I'm sorry I took it. I didn't know—"

"You brought it back," the Sphinx interrupted kindly. "That's what matters. The hat chooses worthy hearts." She bowed her magnificent head. "For your kindness, I offer you a gift. What do you wish most?"

Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything! Unlimited candy? A flying bicycle? A room full of toys?

Then she remembered Clementine alone in her bowl.

"I wish for Clementine to swim in the biggest, most beautiful pool ever. With friends!"

The Sphinx's emerald eyes twinkled. "A wish for another? How rare. How wonderful." She touched Lily's forehead with one wing. "It shall be so."

The waterfall transformed into a crystal pond full of colorful fish. Clementine darted through the water, dancing with new friends.

"Come visit anytime," the Sphinx said. "And Lily? Keep the hat. You've earned it."

Lily opened her eyes. Back in the attic, the purple hat rested on her head. Through the window, she saw something magical — the old fishbowl was now a miniature pond, sparkling with sunlight.

Clementine popped to the surface and winked.

Sometimes, Lily learned, the best magic isn't about what you get. It's about what you give.
