The Sphinx's Magic Gift
Lily's golden retriever, Max, was no ordinary dog. He could juggle three tennis balls at once and understood every word Lily said. But one moonlit night, he discovered something extraordinary in their backyard.
Buried beneath the old oak tree was a tiny golden sphinx, no bigger than a teacup. Its stone wings sparkled with dew.
"I've been sleeping for three thousand years," the sphinx yawned, stretching its paws. "And I am terribly hungry."
Max, being Max, immediately offered his favorite squeaky toy. The sphinx declined politely. "I don't eat toys. I need something special. Moonlight vitamins."
"Moonlight vitamins?" Lily asked, stepping into the garden. "What are those?"
The sphinx's emerald eyes twinkled. "They are the magical bits of moonlight that fall to earth when children laugh while looking at the moon. They give me the power to grant wishes. But I haven't had any in centuries because children stopped watching the moon together."
Lily gasped. "That's because everyone's inside watching screens!"
"Exactly," said the sphinx sadly. "Without moonlight vitamins, I will turn back into regular stone forever. And the world will lose its magic."
Lily grabbed Max's leash. "We're going to fix this!"
They called all their friends and gathered on the hill that night. Under the full moon, they played tag, told jokes, and danced in the silver light. They laughed so hard that their giggles floated upward like bubbles, catching the moonbeams and transforming into sparkling golden dust.
The sphinx caught each speck in its paws, growing brighter and stronger. Soon, it was glowing like a tiny sun.
"You did it!" the sphinx cheered. "For your kindness and friendship, I give you and Max a gift." It touched their foreheads with its stone paw. "Now whenever you need courage, creativity, or joy, just look at the moon and remember this night."
Lily hugged Max, who licked the sphinx's nose. From then on, every child in the neighborhood spent their evenings outside, playing under the moonlight. The sphinx never went hungry again, and Lily and Max discovered that the best magic of all was the friendship they shared with each other—and the whole world.
