The Sphinx's Magic Garden

Leo was exploring behind his grandmother's house when he discovered something extraordinary. An ancient stone sphinx sat beneath the giant palm tree in the overgrown garden. The sphinx had the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman, and when Leo approached, her stone eyes suddenly twinkled.

"I've been waiting for you," the sphinx said in a voice like wind through leaves. "I have a riddle."

Leo nodded bravely. The sphinx continued, "I am green when picked but strong when cooked. Sailors once crossed oceans carrying me in their ships because I kept them healthy. What am I?"

Leo thought hard. His grandmother grew vegetables in her garden, and he had helped her plant seeds last spring. His eyes lit up. "Spinach!"

"Correct!" The sphinx clapped her stone paws together, and to Leo's amazement, she smiled. "But do you know why spinach is truly special?"

Leo shook his head.

The sphinx reached beneath her paw and revealed a shimmering golden cable stretching into the earth. "This cable connects all the gardens in the world. Every time a child tries a new vegetable and discovers they love it, the cable glows brighter with magic."

Suddenly, the palm tree above them began to shimmer. Leaves of silver and gold appeared among the green fronds. The sphinx explained, "When you solved my riddle with an open heart, you awakened the magic. Now you can see the garden's true wonder."

For the rest of the summer, Leo visited the sphinx every day. She taught him about ancient times when people believed magical creatures guarded special places. In return, Leo brought her stories from school and drawings of his adventures. He even started eating more vegetables, just to make the golden cable glow.

"But you must remember," the sphinx whispered on his last day, "magic works best when shared with kindness. The cable's light comes from joy, not just duty."

Leo promised, and even now, years later, whenever he sees a palm tree swaying in the breeze, he wonders if another sphinx is beneath it, waiting for a curious child to discover that magic hides in the most unexpected places—even in a garden of spinach and stone.
