The Sphinx's Magic Garden
Lily discovered the hidden path behind her grandmother's garden on a Tuesday afternoon. The old wooden gate creaked open, revealing a world shimmering with golden light. In the center stood a magnificent creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman—a sphinx!
"Welcome, young one," the sphinx purred, her eyes twinkling like stars. "I've been waiting for someone pure of heart."
Lily's eyes widened. "You're real!"
"Very real, and very hungry," the sphinx smiled. "But not for food. For knowledge." She gestured to a patch of emerald-green leaves. "This is magic spinach. It helps those who have forgotten themselves."
From behind a bush shuffled a clumsy figure with greenish skin. It was a zombie, but not a scary one. This zombie wore a tattered tuxedo and looked confused.
"I... I think I was a chef," the zombie mumbled. "But I can't remember anything."
The sphinx nodded sadly. "Poor Oliver was cursed by a grumpy wizard. The only cure is magic spinach, but he must answer my riddle first."
Lily stepped forward. "I'll help!"
"What is green and makes you strong, but tastes yucky to some?" the sphinx asked.
Oliver's eyes lit up. "Spinach! My special recipe had spinach!"
The sphinx beamed. "Correct!" She offered Oliver the magic leaves. As he ate, his green skin turned pink, and his eyes brightened. "I remember! I'm Chef Oliver from the royal palace!"
He spun around, creating a beautiful spinach salad with his newly-magical touch. "Thank you, Lily! Thank you, sphinx! The magic of friendship and good food cured me!"
The sphinx purred. "And Lily, for your kindness, you may visit anytime."
Lily skipped home, her heart full of magic. She had solved a riddle, made friends with a sphinx, and helped a zombie remember himself—all because she wasn't afraid to be kind to someone different.
