The Sphinx's Magic Garden
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's farm, especially to see Barnaby the old brown bull. He was the gentlest creature, always letting Lily pat his soft nose and feed him apples from her pocket.
One summer afternoon, Lily was playing Zombie Tag with her friends in the meadow. They would shuffle slowly like zombies and try to tag each other, giggling as they staggered around with arms outstretched. Barnaby watched them with big, calm eyes, chewing grass peacefully.
Lily's dog, Buster, a spotted terrier with one floppy ear, suddenly started barking excitedly near the old stone wall at the edge of the property. He never barked unless something important was happening.
"What is it, Buster?" Lily called, following him as he wiggled through a hole in the wall.
On the other side, she couldn't believe her eyes. A beautiful sphinx with golden feathers and wise amber eyes was resting on a mossy rock. The sphinx had the body of a lion and magnificent wings that shimmered like rainbows in the sunlight.
"Hello, young one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I have been waiting for someone kind enough to find my garden."
Buster's tail stopped wagging, and even Barnaby had walked through the hole in the wall and stood quietly nearby. The zombie tag game was completely forgotten.
"This is the Garden of Lost Things," the sphinx explained, waving her paw toward a beautiful meadow filled with glowing flowers. "Children leave their imaginations here when they grow too busy. But you still believe in magic, don't you?"
Lily nodded, her eyes wide with wonder.
"Good," said the sphinx. "Never lose that. The most powerful magic in the world isn't potions or spells—it's keeping your heart open to wonder."
The sphinx gave Lily a small golden feather. "Keep this, and remember: growing up doesn't mean growing boring."
That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of golden feathers and wise creatures, knowing that magic was real as long as she believed in it. And somewhere, Barnaby the bull, Buster the dog, and a beautiful sphinx were guarding the Garden of Lost Things, waiting for other children who still knew how to dream.
