The Sphinx's Magic Baseball
Lily sat on her front porch, swinging her legs and staring at her baseball glove. It was Saturday morning, and her best friend Emma was supposed to come over for their weekly baseball game. But Emma had moved away last month, and now Lily played alone.
She pulled out her mom's old iPhone, hoping Emma might have sent a message. Suddenly, the screen glowed with golden light! A tiny sphinx, no bigger than a thumb, stepped out of the screen and sat on the porch railing.
"Greetings, young champion," the sphinx purred, her wings shimmering like morning dew on spiderwebs. "I am Cleo, guardian of lost friendships and magical games."
Lily's eyes widened. "Are you... real?"
"As real as friendship itself," Cleo smiled. "I sense you miss someone special."
Lily nodded, tears welling. "My best friend moved away. We used to play baseball every Saturday."
Cleo stretched her wings. "Then let us play! But first, you must solve my riddle: What has a face and hands but no body, and can bring friends together across any distance?"
Lily thought hard, then smiled. "A clock! Or... a phone!"
"Correct!" Cleo chirped. "You are clever and kind. A true friend's heart." She tapped the baseball with her paw, and suddenly it began to sparkle like a tiny galaxy. "Now, throw the ball!"
Lily threw the magical baseball high into the sky. It burst into golden sparkles, and suddenly Emma's face appeared in the sparkles!
"Lily!" Emma called through the magic. "I can see you!"
"Throw it back!" Lily shouted. Emma appeared as a shimmering outline, and she caught the ball.
For hours they played magical baseball, the sphinx watching and purring with joy. Whenever they threw the ball, it carried their voices and laughter across the distance.
"You don't need magic to stay friends," Cleo whispered as she faded back into the iPhone. "True friendship lives in your heart. But sometimes, even magical sphinxes need a good baseball game!"
That night, Lily's iPhone pinged. Emma had sent a message: "Best magical baseball game ever! Same time next Saturday?"
Lily smiled at her screen, knowing Cleo was somewhere, waiting for their next game. Because magic, friendship, and baseball could make anything possible.
