The Sphinx's Magic Baseball
Lily loved the old palm tree in her backyard. Its huge leaves whispered secrets in the wind, and she often imagined they were telling her stories from faraway places. One sunny afternoon, Lily was practicing her baseball swing. She tossed the ball up, swung her bat, and—CRACK! The ball sailed high, disappearing right behind the palm tree's thick trunk.
When Lily ran to find it, she gasped. There, nestled between the palm's roots, sat a tiny sphinx no bigger than her baseball. The creature had the body of a lion, great feathery wings, and a face that looked both ancient and kind.
"You seek what you sent flying," the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "But first, you must solve my riddle."
Lily's heart raced with excitement. This was better than any adventure book!
The sphinx's golden hair shimmered in the sunlight as it recited: "I have hands but cannot clap. I have a face but cannot speak. I tell you stories but have no voice. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at the sphinx, then at her watch, then back again.
"A clock!" she cried out.
The sphinx smiled, and its hair sparkled even brighter. "Correct, young seeker. You used your mind and your heart together. That is the true magic."
The sphinx touched Lily's baseball with its paw. "I give this back to you, now blessed with magic. Whenever you play with kindness in your heart, the game will bring joy to all who watch."
Lily's baseball now glowed with a soft golden light. She realized the real magic wasn't in enchantments—it was in the wonder of discovery and the joy of solving puzzles together. From that day on, every game in her yard felt magical. And sometimes, when the palm leaves whispered, she could swear she heard the sphinx chuckling at the joy of the game.
