The Sphinx's Lost Riddle

bullbearsphinx

Lily was supposed to be asleep, but the firefly dancing outside her window was too magical to ignore. She tiptoed into the backyard, where the ordinary garden had transformed into something shimmering and silver.

A massive creature with crescent-shaped horns lay curled near the roses. It was a bull, but not like the ones in books. His fur was midnight blue, and his eyes held entire galaxies of stars.

"I'm Barnaby," he said softly. "I guard the moonflowers. Would you like to see them bloom?"

Lily nodded, breathless. As Barnaby's warm breath touched the flowers, they opened one by one—each revealing a tiny glowing moon inside.

From the oak tree, a brown bear with silver-tipped fur descended. She walked upright, wearing a crown of woven twigs and acorns.

"Another midnight visitor!" The bear smiled. "I'm Bella. I mend broken starlight."

Bella showed Lily how she caught fallen star pieces in her paws and gently pressed them back into the sky, where they twinkled brighter than before.

Then they heard it—a tiny sniffle from beneath the garden bench.

There sat a sphinx no bigger than a kitten, with wings the color of sunrise and paws that shimmered like pearls. But this sphinx wasn't mysterious or grand. She was crying.

"What's wrong?" Lily asked.

The sphinx wiped her eyes. "I'm Sola. I'm supposed to be a guardian of secrets and keeper of ancient riddles. But I forgot my most important riddle—the one that helps lost souls find their way home. Without it, I'm useless."

Barnaby and Bella exchanged knowing glances.

"Maybe," said Barnaby gently, "the riddle isn't something you forgot. Maybe it's something you haven't discovered yet."

"And maybe," added Bella, "the best riddles come from the heart, not from ancient books."

Sola brightened. "Will you help me create a new riddle?"

Together, they worked through the night. Lily contributed childhood wonder. Barnaby offered starry wisdom. Bella brought earthy kindness. And Sola wove their ideas into something magical.

"What has galaxies in its eyes, mends the broken with gentle paws, and creates wonder from tears?" Sola asked, her wings spreading with pride. "The answer is... FRIENDSHIP."

The garden glowed golden as Sola's riddle floated into the sky, becoming a constellation of three creatures intertwined.

Lily woke in her bed as sunlight streamed through her window. Had it all been a dream? On her nightstand sat three things: a moonflower petal, a piece of polished starlight, and a single feather the color of sunrise.

She smiled, knowing some friendships are too magical to be just dreams.
