The Sphinx's Lost Hat

Lily loved running through the park after school. Her sneakers would pound against the pavement, her backpack bouncing with every step. One afternoon, something red and sparkly caught her eye near the old oak tree. A hat! Not just any hat – a crimson velvet top hat with a peacock feather curling around the brim.

As Lily reached for it, the ground shimmered like sunlight on water. A tiny creature, no bigger than a kitten, poked its head from behind a mushroom. It had the body of a fluffy cat but the wise face of an ancient being. A sphinx!

"That's my hat," squeaked the sphinx. "I'm Sophie. I've been looking everywhere!"

Lily giggled. "A sphinx named Sophie? And why would a tiny sphinx need such a big hat?"

Sophie puffed out her chest. "It's a magic hat! When I wear it, I can ask riddles that make flowers bloom and children laugh. But today I lost it while running from a grumpy squirrel."

"Running?" Lily's eyes widened. "But sphinxes are supposed to be wise and still."

"True wisdom," Sophie winked, "means knowing when to run and when to stand your ground. The squirrel was grumpy because he was lonely. I should have stopped to talk, not run away."

Lily's heart swelled with understanding. She'd been running away from the new girl at school, too afraid to say hello.

Sophie placed the hat on her tiny head. Suddenly, moonflowers erupted from the grass, glowing like tiny lanterns. "For returning my hat, I'll share its magic with you. But you must promise – use courage instead of running away from what scares you."

Lily nodded solemnly. "I promise. Tomorrow I'll talk to the new girl."

Sophie's eyes twinkled. "Brave choice. Sometimes the bravest running is running toward friendship, not away from fear."

As the sphinx disappeared in a sparkle of moonlight, Lily skipped home, her heart light. Tomorrow, she wouldn't run. She'd say hello – and maybe, just maybe, make a new friend.
