The Sphinx's Lightning Pool
Maya and Leo discovered the magic hidden behind the waterfall on the hottest day of summer. Beyond the rushing water lay a crystal pool surrounded by swaying palm trees, their leaves whispering secrets in the breeze.
But what caught their breath was the magnificent golden sphinx resting beside the water. She wasn't scary at all—her emerald eyes twinkled like stars, and her wings shimmered with rainbow colors.
"Welcome, little ones," the sphinx purred. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to swim in my Lightning Pool."
"Lightning?" Maya asked, her eyes wide.
"Watch," said the sphinx.
Suddenly, a bolt of purple lightning struck the center of the pool. But it didn't hurt the water—it turned the surface into sparkling glitter that tasted like grape soda when Leo splashed it.
"The lightning comes from the magic storm cloud that only I can see," the sphinx explained. "It makes the water give wishes to pure hearts."
Just then, a sleepy creature crawled from behind a palm rock. It had green skin, floppy ears, and moved in slow, wiggly hops.
"That's Zomby," said the sphinx fondly. "He's a zombie turtle, but don't worry—he's not like the scary ones in stories. He's just very, very slow and loves naps."
Zomby yawned, showing tiny teeth, and gave a little wave with his flipper.
"He guards the pool at night," the sphinx continued. "Zomby might be slow, but he's the most loyal friend."
Maya and Leo spent the afternoon swimming in the magical pool, each lightning bolt bringing new surprises—cherry-flavored splashes, floating bubbles that sang, and water that made them glow like fireflies.
Zomby watched sleepily from his palm rock, occasionally clapping his flippers when they did cannonballs.
As the sun began to set, the sphinx smiled. "Come back anytime. True friends, like you two, always find their way to magic."
Hand in hand, Maya and Leo walked home, knowing that the best adventures are the ones you share with friends—even if one of them is a zombie turtle who moves slower than a snail.
