The Sphinx's Lightning Gift

Lily had the most wild and curly hair in the village. It bounced when she walked and sparkled in the sunlight, but she wished it would lie flat like the other children's.

One afternoon, while exploring the forest, Lily discovered a hidden clearing she'd never seen before. In the center stood a magnificent stone sphinx with emerald eyes and golden wings. The sphinx's long, flowing mane was carved so beautifully that it seemed to ripple in the breeze.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke, her voice like music. "I've been waiting for someone with hair as wild as the wind."

Lily's eyes grew wide. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," the sphinx said mysteriously. "Behind me lies the Enchanted Pool, whose water can grant one true wish. But it only appears during a lightning storm, and there's a small problem."

"What problem?"

"A friendly zombie named Zephyr guards the pool," the sphinx explained gently. "He was once a boy like you, cursed by a lonely wizard. Now he shuffles around the pool, sad and alone. Everyone runs away from him, but he just needs a friend."

Lily's heart went out to Zephyr. "That's so lonely!"

Just then, the sky darkened. Thunder rumbled, and a brilliant bolt of lightning struck the ground before them. Where it hit, crystal-blue water bubbled up from the earth, forming a shimmering pool. And there stood Zephyr—a green-skinned boy with tattered clothes and the kindest eyes Lily had ever seen.

Zephyr tried to hide behind a rock. "Don't be scared," he mumbled.

"I'm not scared," Lily said, stepping closer. "Your eyes are beautiful. Like the sea."

No one had ever complimented Zephyr before. His face lit up. "Really?"

Lily nodded. "Really. And you know what? I love my wild hair now. It's special—just like you."

The sphinx smiled. "Kindness is the truest magic. The water grants your wish, Lily—not to change your hair, but to see that you were perfect all along."

The pool's water began to glow. Zephyr's green skin faded to warm brown, and his clothes became new and bright. The curse had broken.

"Thank you!" Zephyr cheered, giving Lily a hug. "Will you be my friend?"

"Always," Lily promised, her curls bouncing happily. "Friends forever."
