The Sphinx's Lightning Game

Leo loved the old swimming pool at the bottom of his grandmother's garden. It hadn't held water in years, but magic lived there. One evening, as storm clouds gathered overhead, Leo saw something extraordinary.

A creature sat on the pool's diving board—not exactly a cat, not exactly a lion. It had the body of a golden feline and the face of a wise child. A sphinx!

"You have curious hair," the sphinx said, tilting her head. "It stands up like lightning bolts."

Leo laughed. His messy brown hair always stuck up, especially on humid days. "I'm Leo. Who are you?"

"I'm Cleo," the sphinx replied. "And I'm bored. Will you play padel with me?"

"Padel?" Leo asked.

Celo reached behind the diving board and pulled out two small racquets with magical glowing strings. "It's like tennis, but more... surprising." She tossed one to Leo.

As Leo caught it, real lightning flashed across the sky. The racquet buzzed in his hand.

"Hit the ball into the pool," Cleo said, producing a ball that shimmered like starlight.

Leo swung the racquet. Instead of a regular bounce, the ball burst into tiny lightning bolts that zipped around the empty pool like fireflies.

"Your turn!" Leo cheered.

Cleo hit the ball, and it turned into a small whirlpool of sparkling water. They laughed and played, creating lightning, water, and stars with every hit. The storm raged above, but down in the garden, everything was wonder and light.

"You're very good at this," Cleo said. "Most children are afraid to try new games."

"Why would they be afraid?" Leo asked. "It's just fun!"

Cleo smiled. "Exactly. The best magic happens when you're brave enough to play."

As the rain began to fall, Cleo faded into mist. "Come back tomorrow, Leo. Your hair still has more lightning to give."

Leo ran home through the rain, his hair still standing up, his heart full of magic. He couldn't wait for tomorrow's game.
