The Sphinx's Lightning Baseball Game
Emma loved summer evenings. The air was warm, crickets chirped, and the stars twinkled like tiny diamonds. She sat by the backyard pool, dangling her feet in the cool water. Buster, her golden retriever, snoozed beside her, his tail twitching as he dreamed.
Suddenly, the sky turned purple. FLASH! A bolt of lightning struck the middle of the pool—but it didn't splash. Instead, the water began to glow. Ripples of light spread outward, forming a shape. A creature rose from the water, shaking droplets from its fur.
Emma gasped. It had the body of a lion and the head of a human, with wise eyes that sparkled like moonlight.
"A sphinx!" Emma whispered.
The sphinx smiled. "Correct, young one. I've traveled far on this lightning bolt, and I'm bored. Will you play?" She gestured, and Emma's baseball rolled from the grass. "I know this game. Your people play it with sticks and balls. Let us play!"
Emma grabbed her baseball bat from the porch. "But Buster can't play. He's a dog."
"Ah," the sphinx winked, "but every creature has magic inside. Watch."
She touched Buster's forehead with one claw. The dog woke up, stretching—and suddenly stood on two legs, grinning.
"Batter up!" Buster barked happily.
They played until dawn. The sphinx hit balls that turned into butterflies. Emma swung and made stars sparkle. Buster caught everything, even balls that flew into the clouds.
As the sun rose, the sphinx grew translucent. "Thank you for the adventure," she said. "Remember—magic lives wherever friendship blooms."
She dissolved into mist, leaving behind one thing: a golden baseball that glowed whenever Emma felt lonely.
Emma and Buster walked inside, tired but happy. Some secrets were meant to be kept, shared only between a girl, her dog, and a sphinx who loved baseball.
