The Sphinx's Last Secret

Maya's phone buzzed with another text from her ex-best friend, and she almost threw it across the cafeteria. Three weeks of silent treatment, and now Jess wanted to talk? No thanks. She'd rather focus on her goldfish, who at least never ditched her for the popular crowd. Okay, technically Goldie was a rescue from her cousin's dorm room eviction crisis, but still.

"You're obsessing," said Lily, sliding into the seat opposite her. "Again."

"I'm not obsessing. I'm processing. There's a difference."

"There's also hair dye involved." Lily pointed at Maya's newly teal streak. "Since when do you DIY your hair with drugstore dye?"

Since Jess's Instagram post showed her with matching teal streaks, captioned 'new era, who dis?' Maya couldn't say that though.

"Artistic expression," Maya said. "Whatever. Let's talk about something else. My cousin texted—she's coming back for spring break and wants her goldfish back."

"Your cat's going to be devastated."

"My cat is currently plotting murder. Goldie's living on borrowed time."

That evening, Maya trudged to her part-time job at the vintage shop on Main Street, where Mrs. Chen had her organizing the mythology section again. Sphinx statues, fake papyrus scrolls, pyramid bookends—all the cool stuff nobody bought. A sphinx mask with broken wings caught her eye. Mrs. Chen said it had been there since the 90s.

"Something on your mind?" Mrs. Chen asked.

Maya found herself explaining everything—the friend drama, the hair, the goldfish that wasn't even hers to keep. "I feel like I'm stuck between who I was and who I'm supposed to be. Like, Jess moved on and I'm just... waiting."

Mrs. Chen pulled down the sphinx mask. "You know what the sphinx really represents? Not riddles, not mystery. It's about guarding thresholds. Standing between what was and what will be." She handed it to Maya. "Maybe you're not stuck. Maybe you're just standing at your own threshold."

Maya bought it with her employee discount. That night, she sat in her room with Goldie swimming in his bowl nearby, the sphinx mask on her wall like permission to figure herself out. Jess texted again: 'Can we talk?'

Maya typed back: 'Yeah. But first, I need to do something for myself.'

She took a selfie—teal hair, sphinx mask, goldfish photobombing in the background—and posted it. 'New era, who dis?'

Sometimes the best riddles answer themselves.
