The Sphinx's Last Riddle

pyramidspyfriendsphinx

The corporate pyramid rose in glass and steel above Chicago, its apex lost in the gray January sky. Elena stood in the sterile bathroom on the 42nd floor, applying lipstick with hands that wouldn't stop trembling. In three minutes, she would walk into the boardroom and betray her best friend.

She and Maya had climbed this structure together, decade after decade, supporting each other through divorces and promotions, through the deaths of parents and the birth of ambitions. They called each other "work wives," shared clothes and secrets and a particular brand of cynical humor that came from watching too many talented friends get crushed beneath the weight of men who believed themselves indispensable.

Now Elena was the spy.

Six months ago, the FBI had come to her—Maya was under investigation for insider trading, they'd said. They needed someone close, someone who could document the transfers. Elena had refused. Maya was incapable of that kind of greed. But the agents had shown her photographs, bank records, timestamps that matched Maya's late nights at the office.

"She's using you," they'd said. "Everyone uses the spy who thinks she's protecting her friend."

The project was called Sphinx—a revolutionary AI system that could predict market movements with terrifying accuracy. Maya was the architect. And yesterday, Elena had found the encrypted files on Maya's laptop: the same patterns the FBI had described, the same offshore accounts.

The bathroom door opened. Maya entered, looking exhausted but brilliant in her sharp suit. "You ready for this?" she asked, smiling like they were still friends, like the world wasn't about to crack open.

"Maya," Elena said, her voice barely a whisper. "The Sphinx. What are you feeding it?"

Maya's smile didn't waver. "Data, El. Just data. Like always."

"But whose?" Elena pressed, and watched her friend's face become something ancient and unknowable, a riddle she should have solved years ago.

"The data belongs to the pyramid," Maya said softly. "I'm just the one who finally figured out how to redistribute it."

In that moment, Elena understood: Maya wasn't hoarding wealth. She was planning to burn the pyramid down.

The boardroom doors awaited. Elena made her choice.
