The Sphinx's Last Question

catlightningsphinx

Maya's cat, Pancake, sat on her desk staring at the screen like he understood the problem better than she did. Which, honestly, wasn't saying much.

"You're not helping," she muttered, pushing him aside. Her Instagram DMs were blowing up—everyone from school wanted to know who Sphinx_Queen really was. Her anonymous poetry account had somehow gone viral overnight, and now her entire social existence was about to implode.

Because here's the thing: Maya at school was the quiet girl who sat in the back of AP Lit, barely speaking above a whisper. But online? Sphinx_Queen dropped truth bombs about loneliness, first crushes, and feeling like an alien in your own life. People thought she was mysterious. Enigmatic. A literal sphinx.

The irony wasn't lost on her.

Her phone lit up again. Liam, the cute soccer guy she'd been low-key crushing on since freshman year, had messaged her: "Your writing hits different. Who are you really?"

Maya's stomach did that lightning-strike thing it always did when something mattered way too much. This was it—the moment her two lives were about to crash into each other at full speed. She could block him. Delete the account. Go back to being invisible Maya.

Or she could finally stop hiding.

Pancake meowed, judgment in his yellow eyes.

"Okay, okay," she said. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.

Outside, thunder cracked as rain started hammering her window, perfect dramatic timing for what she was about to do. Maya took a breath and typed three words that changed everything: "It's Maya. From AP Lit."

The silence after she hit send was louder than any storm. But then—

"Wait, seriously? That's actually kind of perfect."

And just like that, the sphinx's riddle was solved. Some masks aren't about hiding. They're about finding the courage to show your face.
