The Sphinx's Kindness Riddle
Lily loved exploring the forest behind her house. One hot afternoon, she followed a sparkling trail to a hidden pond with the clearest blue water she'd ever seen.
By the pond sat a golden sphinx with gentle green eyes. But next to the sphinx something strange shuffled—a dusty zombie with patchy clothes and slow, awkward steps. Lily froze. Zombies were supposed to be scary!
The sphinx spoke in a warm voice. "Don't be afraid. This is poor Zed. He was once a boy like you, but a grumpy wizard's curse made him forget how to be alive. Now he just needs help remembering."
Lily looked closer. Zed wasn't trying to scare anyone. He was trying to pick flowers, but his stiff hands kept missing. He looked so sad and lonely.
A big brown bear lumbered out of the trees. Lily gasped, but the bear simply sat beside Zed and nudged him gently with his nose. Zed smiled—a rusty, creaky smile.
"The bear is your friend?" Lily asked Zed.
Zed nodded slowly. "Benny... bear... friend."
The sphinx smiled. "Here is my riddle for you, Lily: What makes someone worth being your friend?"
Lily thought carefully. She looked at Zed, who seemed scary at first but was really just lonely. She looked at the bear, who seemed dangerous but was actually gentle and kind.
"Kindness," Lily said. "And not judging by how someone looks."
"Correct," said the sphinx. Golden light sparkled around Zed. His gray skin turned pink, his eyes brightened, and he stood tall. The curse had lifted!
"Thank you," Zed said clearly. He hugged Benny the bear. "You showed me friendship when I couldn't even remember my name."
Lily waved goodbye to her new friends and ran home, already planning her next adventure. She learned that magic comes in many forms—and that kindness is the strongest magic of all.
