The Sphinx's Kindness Riddle
Lily had the most magical hair in all of Willowbrook Village. It was bright orange, like sunshine wrapped around her head, and it glowed whenever she felt happy. The other children sometimes stared, but Lily didn't mind. She knew her hair made her special.
One afternoon, Lily discovered an ancient map in her grandmother's attic. It showed the path to the Great Sphinx, a legendary creature who guarded the Enchanted Garden at the top of Whisper Mountain. The stories said the Sphinx could grant one special wish to anyone pure of heart.
Lily packed her favorite orange snack and tied her orange hair back with a ribbon. 'I'm going on an adventure!' she declared.
The mountain path was twisty and bright with flowers. Halfway up, Lily heard sniffles behind a berry bush.
A small zombie sat there, his green skin patchy and his clothes ragged. He looked up with sad, gentle eyes.
'Everyone runs away,' he sniffled. 'They think zombies are scary monsters.'
Lily knelt down. 'You don't look scary. You look lonely.' She held out her hand. 'I'm Lily. Want to come find the Sphinx with me?'
The zombie's eyes widened. 'You'd be friends with me? Really?'
'Of course!' Lily shared her orange with him. 'I'm Zed,' he said, smiling for the first time.
Together they climbed to the peak. There sat the Great Sphinx — lion body, wise face, golden eyes full of ancient magic.
'Answer my riddle to pass,' she rumbled. 'What costs nothing but is worth everything?'
Lily thought. Zed scratched his head. Then Zed spoke softly, 'Kindness? Because nobody was ever kind to me before, and it meant the whole world.'
The Sphinx smiled, and the mountain seemed to brighten. 'Wisdom comes from unexpected places.' She touched Lily's orange hair. 'Your wish?'
Lily looked at Zed, then back. 'I already got my wish — I found a friend who needed kindness most.' Zed's green cheeks turned pink with happiness.
Hand in hand, Lily and Zed skipped down the mountain. Lily's orange hair glowed brighter than ever, because she had learned something magical: true friendship sees with your heart, not your eyes, and kindness is the greatest adventure of all.
