The Sphinx's Green Riddle
Lily had the most extraordinary hair. It curled and bounced in every direction, catching sunlight like golden springs. Her mom called it "her lion's mane," but Lily just called it messy.
One afternoon, while hiding behind the garden shed with a bowl of spinach she was supposed to be eating, Lily heard a tiny voice.
"I say, that smells delicious."
Lily jumped. Behind her sat a creature no bigger than a cat — a miniature sphinx with tiny paws, small feathered wings, and wise amber eyes.
"A sphinx!" Lily gasped. "But you're so small!"
"Size matters not," the sphinx declared importantly. "I am Great-whiskers the Majestic, Keeper of Riddles, Guardian of..." She paused. "Oh dear, I've forgotten what I guard. That's rather embarrassing."
The tiny sphinx's wings drooped. "I haven't eaten in weeks. Riddles require energy, you know. My brain feels quite fuzzy."
Lily looked at her spinach. "You want this? It's just spinach."
"Just spinach?" The sphinx's eyes widened. "Magical memory-leaf! The most powerful fuel for riddles in all the world!"
Lily pushed the bowl forward. The sphinx took a delicate bite of the green leaves.
Suddenly, her amber eyes glowed golden. Her wings fluffed up. "Riddles return! Mysteries awaken! Now I remember — I guard the secret doorway to the Library of Lost Stories!"
The sphinx stood tall and posed Lily's first challenge: "What has to be broken before you can use it?"
Lily thought about her hair — she always broke hair ties. She thought about eggs. Then she smiled. "An egg!"
"Correct!" Great-whiskers cheered. "You have passed the test! Spinach for wisdom, and your clever heart shall open the way."
And that's how Lily, the girl with wild, wonderful hair, became best friends with a spinach-powered sphinx and protector of the Library of Lost Stories, where every book contained magic waiting to be found.
