The Sphinx's Green Gift

Lily hated dinner. Her mom had made spinach again—that leafy green vegetable that looked like tiny wilted umbrellas. She poked at it with her fork, sighing.

"Eat your spinach, Lily," Mom said. "It's full of vitamin A, which helps you see better at night."

Lily rolled her eyes. "I want to be an explorer, not a superhero with night vision!"

That night, Lily crept downstairs to sneak a cookie. But something strange happened. The thick cable behind the television began to glow, shimmering like a rainbow ribbon. And from it emerged a small creature—no bigger than her dad's iPhone—with the body of a lion and the head of a wise old person.

"I am Zephyr the Sphinx," the creature announced in a voice like wind chimes. "And you, young explorer, have been chosen."

Lily's heart raced with excitement. "Chosen for what?"

"To solve the Great Riddle of Green," Zephyr said. "Follow me!"

The sphinx led her through the television cable, which had transformed into a magical tunnel. They emerged in a kingdom where everything was green—green trees, green flowers, even green skies that sparkled like emeralds.

"Here's your riddle," Zephyr said. "What makes you strong when you hate it, helps you see when you doubt it, and grows from earth but tastes like magic?"

Lily thought hard. She explored the green kingdom with Zephyr, making friends with fireflies that glowed like tiny lanterns and helping a family of rabbits build their burrow. The rabbits offered her strange green leaves.

"Try it," the mother rabbit urged. "It gives us energy to hop high and see clearly in the dark."

Lily took a bite. It was... delicious! Sweet and crisp, like nothing she'd ever tasted. Suddenly, she could see the fireflies' glow more brightly. She felt energy bubbling in her legs.

"SPINACH!" she shouted. "The answer is spinach!"

Zephyr's eyes twinkled. "Correct! And now you understand the magic."

Back in her kitchen, Lily hugged her mom. "Can I have more spinach tomorrow? It's actually... magical."

Her mom smiled, confused but pleased.

Under the table, Zephyr the Sphinx winked at Lily, then dissolved into sparkles. Some adventures, Lily realized, begin with something as simple as trying something new.
