The Sphinx's Green Gift
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, but she'd never ventured past the old stone wall until one sunny afternoon. Pushing through a tangle of vines, she gasped—there stood a magnificent creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise, kind woman.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx said, her voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."
Lily's eyes widened. "You're a sphinx! Like in my storybook!"
The sphinx nodded sadly. "Yes, but I'm not well. The magic that keeps me alive is fading. I need something special—spinach grown in moonlight and touched by lightning."
"Spinach?" Lily wrinkled her nose. "But that's yucky!"
"Not ordinary spinach," the sphinx explained. "These leaves contain a special vitamin that magic creatures need. Without it, I'll turn to stone forever."
Determined to help, Lily set off toward the enchanted forest where the magical spinach grew. Suddenly, a enormous bear lumbered out from behind a tree. Lily trembled, but the bear smiled warmly.
"I'm Barnaby, the garden guardian," he rumbled gently. "The sphinx sent you, didn't she?"
Barnaby led Lily to a hidden clearing where glowing green leaves shimmered under the moon's light, even though it was daytime. But as Lily reached for them, dark clouds gathered. CRACK! Lightning flashed inches from her feet.
"Quick!" Barnaby shouted over the thunder. "The lightning charges the leaves with magic!"
Lily grabbed a handful of spinach just as another bolt struck. The leaves buzzed with energy in her hands. Racing back to the sphinx, she fed her the magical greens.
The sphinx's eyes sparkled brighter than ever. "Thank you, Lily! You saved me." She sprinkled something onto Lily's hands—tiny seeds. "Plant these, and you'll always have a friend in the garden."
That night, Lily learned that even ordinary things like spinach could be magical, and that being brave meant helping others, even when you're scared yourself.
