The Sphinx's Green Garden
Lily loved adventures with her golden dog, Sunny. One sunny afternoon, they wandered deep into the woods until they found something magical—a stone sphinx with emerald eyes, sleeping beside a pond.
The sphinx woke with a yawn that rippled the water. "I am Cleo, guardian of the pond," she said, her voice like wind chimes. "Answer my riddle, and you may feed my fish."
Lily's heart fluttered. "I'm ready!"
"I'm green when fresh, I'm soft when cooked, I make you strong, but I'm not a hook. What am I?"
Lily gasped. She knew! In her backpack, her mom had packed spinach sandwiches for their adventure. She pulled out the bright green leaves from her sandwich.
"Spinach!" Lily exclaimed.
Cleo's eyes widened. "A child who loves spinach? Marvelous!" The sphinx gestured to the pond, and suddenly the water shimmered with color.
Hundreds of goldfish—orange, silver, speckled with stars—swirled to the surface. They weren't ordinary fish. They could talk!
"Thank you, clever child," a goldfish with shimmering scales said. "For three hundred years, nobody has guessed. We've been waiting for someone curious enough to explore—and brave enough to eat their vegetables."
Sunny barked happily, tail thumping. Cleo smiled. "Stay and share your spinach sandwiches. These fish have wonderful stories."
Lily sat beside the sphinx, feeding spinach to grateful goldfish while they told tales of ancient Egypt, hidden treasure, and friendship. As the sun set, Cleo whispered a secret: "The magic wasn't the answer. It was that you weren't afraid to try something green and new."
Lily hugged Sunny. She couldn't wait for their next adventure—maybe she'd even pack extra spinach.
